Herb Profile : Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

What would we do in winter without this most warming, stimulatory root? Its diffusive nature and the fact it dilates peripheral blood vessels makes it wonderfully effective for cold hands and feet. It also lowers cholesterol levels in the blood. Ginger is warming and tonic to the digestion, stimulating saliva and hydrochloric acid production and has antimicrobial properties against several bacteria including salmonella. I also find it invaluable in vertigo and travel sickness. Again its warmth diffuses into the uterus where its tonic action can be beneficial for scanty or painful periods.
Ginger is a favourite ingredient in rubefacient preparations for rheumatic conditions, sprains and the pain of arthritis.
Don’t use it if you suffer from any inflammation of the digestive tract and especially if you have a peptic ulcer.
