Thuja

  All about Herbs and Herbalism
Herb Profile : Arbor vitae (Thuja occidentalis)

This inconspicuous little shrub (it grows only to about four feet) is one of the most important herbs in the materia medica. I have one I have had since it was a baby in a pot and I was able to take it along with me to a talk. One of its names is 'sun kissed' referring to its appearance, which looks as if the sun is reflecting off the tips of its branches. Another name for it I love is 'tree of life', which says everything about it.

It exhibits antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Its major function is as a cleanser for the lymphatic system and it is definitely my first choice as a tincture for uterine fibroids since it has a particular affinity for the uterus. However, it effectively treats any benign gr`fowth e.g. polyps, warts, verrucae, fungal skin conditions. For the latter I would use a cream or ointment. Thuja is also a very useful antidote to a vaccination reaction.

Thuja has an affinity for the respiratory and urinary systems being both expectorant and antiseptic. It therefore has application for bronchitis, cystitis etc.

Another thing I like is that one doesn't harm the tree in any way by using it since it is the growing tips, which are used and these are generally trimmed away yearly anyway with a mature specimen.

Caution: Avoid using Thuja is you are pregnant or lactating.
